At Calgary Reads, we love literacy. And with that comes a desire to inspire a generation of readers in a community where reading matters.
Reading builds our community and our community builds readers. That’s why we work with schools, educators, families and community partners to offer programs, events and resources to encourage a passion for reading at every age. Our primary focus is early literacy – for children, from birth to eight years – to establish a foundation of success that starts with a child’s ability to read with confidence and joy.
At Calgary Reads, we believe reading is for everyone because literacy is vital to our development. It’s linked to a range of personal, social and financial benefits, from positive self-esteem to ongoing employment, good health, community engagement, reduced crime rates and even a stronger national economy.
In short, reading matters. That’s why for over a decade, Calgary Reads has been a part of the city’s fabric to bridge the great divide between home and school. Launched as an early-literacy initiative, it has grown into a vibrant, multifaceted reading movement, expanding into the provincial literacy landscape.
